NYPD BLUES IN THE NEWS: I was sickened today watching a live PBA press conference on NY1. Pat Lynchs hardline defense of his members who viciously and recklessly assaulted and then killed Eric Garner may have been expected, but even I didnt expect him to begin vilifying Garner so quickly. The entire press conference was one vile defense after another, not merely representing the members of his union. Lynch and co felt the need to insult the memory of this man who was arrested for selling loosies on the street and stated that police officers must protect themselves in the line of duty. Lynch hurts the entire cause of organized labor; ITS EASY TO SEE HOW MUCH THE PBA IS NOT A UNION AT ALL BUT AN APOLOGIST AND DEFENSE ORGANIZATION. And decent police officers should be ashamed of him and the foul reach of this organization. The gang of cops who grabbed this man in a hold that cut off his breathing (was it a choke hold?? The M.E. thinks so!), threw him to the ground and then pushed his face into the sidewalk as he gasped for air had no regard for this mans life. And the EMTs who came along nonchalantly and checked for a pulse after conferring with the cops and never even attempted to give Garner oxygen should be viewed as complicit in this mans death too. Each time we think that we turned a corner in the struggle against racism and classism, another horrible incident occurs. Lynch and the PBA can defend violent, murderous cops all they want but if the DA does not go after these guys for murder, all hell will break loose in these streets. And then they will find the need to use brute force against the protestors. And then the cycle will repeat itself. If our mayor is to be viewed as a progressive, he cannot allow corruption which callously takes lives.
