NYPD wants to look like the military, be armed like the military, insulated from prosecution for crimes like the military (whole separate post), heroicized like the military, but doesnt give a damn about chain of command/civilian authority like the military. HOW DARE Mayor de Blasio say hes worried about how his son would be treated by NYPD... I mean its not like NYPD has decades long trend of infringing on the constitutional rights of black boys/men, ranging from unwarranted searches to, you know, cold blooded murder by guns or hands. Oh wait... If youre watching whats happening in New York right now, youre seeing a problem that plagues every large urban center in America (and even some not so large). Police power reigns supreme. Im not talking about the ability to kick down doors at will (though, that too). Im talking about the ability to influence and literally control elected officials through organization. The biggest weapon police power has isnt a gun, its the ability to effectively label anyone who speaks out against the police in any way as being anti-police, which essentially means youre interpreted as being anti-hero and anti-America. This is the same tactic used with regard to the Iraq war... speak in opposition to it, and suddenly youre anti-troops. Speak out against police unjustly murdering black folks, and suddenly youre anti-police. I wouldnt be surprised is Mayor de Blasio lost his reelection bid because of this.
