NZ has more cats per person than just about any country in the world. We have an estimated 1.4 million domestic cats roaming free, hunting and killing native species with impunity. Cats are the only domestic animal that is not controlled by law, yet they have contributed to the greatest number of extinctions of any predator since the arrival of Europeans in NZ. Given that NZ has seen almost one quarter of all modern bird extinctions take place here, it is important that we remain conscious of this history and the ongoing threat all cats still place on our remaining ground nesting birds and lizards.
