Na Fir Dileas Glencoe Commemoration 13TH FEBRUARY 2011 By Charlie McAulay Robertson In this land of mountain, loch and glen, once lived a clan, of highland woman, children and men. A place where the eagle flew and the deer it did roam, A place they were proud of, the place they called home. Glencoe was the place where the Clan McDonald did live, Where once food and shelter, to the redcoats they did give. The Clans folk were welcoming and so unaware, Of the murderous events that would soon happen there. On A fateful February night in 1692, As the snow fell and the wild wind blew. They were set upon as they slept, by the governments men, and the sound of gun shots, rang out through the Glen. 38 men, woman and children were killed, at the hands of the troops who’s bellies they’d just filled. The rest of the Clan into the blizzard they fled, many didn’t survive and they were soon found dead. In the aftermath of this murderous attack, back to the Glen the McDonalds gradually came back. To the place where the Eagle flew and the deer it did roam, A place they were proud of, the place they called home. So on this hallowed ground on which we now stand, The Spirit of MacIan will remain in this land. Glencoe was their home, where they lived and died, Glencoe is the place where their spirits survived. So lets bow our heads together and let us pray, For the poor souls that were murdered, in their beds where they lay. And the ones that were shot in the back as they fled, And met a slow death in the snow where they bled. They were shot or cut down by the sword, or knife, because they were Scots who chose the Highland way of life. Murdered by orders made with the stroke of a pen, to put an end to the Clan of the Glen. Then lift your hearts and raise your heads to the sky, where some day soon only the Saltier will fly. And never forget what a price they did pay, So that Scotland would be free from foreign rule some day. And never let anything like this ever happen again In the Land of our Fathers, Those Brave Highland Men.. ALBA GU BRATH !!!!! SOAR ALBA !!!!! AMEN !!!!!
