Nadya Nguyen, one of our past retreaters, shares her discovery in her life about running and meditation. The following is an excerpt from Nadyas article: A view under the Light of Buddha Mountain (Fo Guang Shan). Meditation and Running – Is there anything relevance between these two activities? In the eyes of many people, they are completely different, but to me they are similar to some extent. I used to not like running since it is such a boring job when doing the same things every day. I prefer dancing as I feel it’s a true way to communicate myself, and I could leave all baggage and stress behind when dancing. Later due to rigid study schedule, I change to running because it’s so convenient that I can do it anytime. And then I realize that simple sport does not mean easy conquest. Running well is a matter of having the patience to persevere with it. If you start skipping runs because the weather is too lousy, pretty soon you start missing it because the weathers too nice! Personally I think running is both an exercise and a metaphor. Daily running, piling up the races, bit by bit I raise the bar, and by passing each level I elevate myself and raise my own level. When I run I neither have to talk or listen to anybody. This is an essential part of my day I cant go without. This is just like practice meditation. ... Whether it is meditation or running, time is not an obstacle. It doesn’t matter how old you are 20, 30, 40 or even 50, 60, it can always be a starting point for something new in your life as long as you keep yourself within that passion. I also believe that people are connected from heart to heart, and it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, there are no boundaries or barriers when we want to apply Buddhism to every aspect of life. Happiness is what you THINK not what you WANT. This is a new angle that I have been able to discover and feel myself after the Monastery experience. Nadya Nguyen FGS 27/10/2014
