Naegleria fowleri is an ameba found around the world, often in warm or hot freshwater (lakes, rivers and hot springs). The ameba can travel up the nose and into the brain, causing a disease that destroys brain tissue and causes brain swelling and death. Recreational water-associated infections occur most often in July, August and September, when temperatures are high for prolonged periods of time.
