Nairobi, Kenya: There is confusion and unease in the military after soldiers noticed a significant change in this month’s salaries as indicated on their payslips. The Standard has established that their pay was less by an average Sh10,000 following the exclusion of food and laundry allowances that they have enjoyed for some time. Commissioned officers and soldiers from the Air Force, Army and Navy received payslips that indicated only basic allowances. The soldiers normally receive Sh9,500 as ‘gas’ or food allowance, while an additional Sh2,000 and Sh500 is paid out to women and men respectively as laundry allowance. Soldiers who spoke to The Standard on condition of anonymity, because military protocol does not allow them to comment publicly on the matter, said the change follows implementation by Kenya Revenue Authority of a requirement that even State officers pay tax on allowances.
