Nakhid’s son progressing at AU Panos Nakhid, son of former national captain David Nakhid is currently on a football scholarship at American University in the United States and is reportedly making steady progress in the game. Panos, born in Greece, has had some strong performances for American, after joining them on scholarship from the David Nakhid International Football Academy in September last year. Among his highlights included an 89th minute game winner in a 1-0 victory over Loyola University to guide American to their 10th win of the season. American reached the quarter-finals of the Patriot League but lost on penalty kicks to the US Military Academy. The Washington Post highlighted Panos recently, mentioning the fact that his father David was a star member of their 1985 squad. Panos, during his earlier days, was MVP at the Como Cup in Italy in 2009 and also participated in the Mediterranean International Cup in Barcelona in 2011 and 2012. He was named to the Northern Greek All Star team in 2012. David Nakhid played top flight football in Switzerland, Belgium, Greece, USA and Belgium. He established his international academy in 2006. He obtained a double major in international relations and economics at American University where he was also inducted in the University’s hall of fame in 2005. Jamaica cautious ahead of opener vs T&T Jamaica Under 20 coach Theodore Whitmore says his team will be cautious in its opening match of the Concacaf Under 20 Championship tomorrow against T&T in Kingston. Whitmore, a former Jamaica senior team player and head coach, was speaking to the press following his team’s back to back friendlies with Cuba which the ‘Reggae Boyz’ won 2-1 and drew 1-1. ‘In terms of preparation, we are behind. We have work to do,’ said Whitmore. ‘The other teams coming in for the championship have better-quality players who play in professional leagues around the world. I’m not 100 per cent pleased, but we have a couple days to fine-tune for the championship. We have players who can get goals.’ Jamaica also played as a guest team in the Under-20 Central America Championship last month, losing all three matches. However, Whitmore said they had improved on those performances. ‘We conceded 12 goals in three games during the Copa Simón Bolívar tournament in Venezuela last month, and during camp, we worked on that area and the team has improved defensively,’ he said. T&T and Jamaica will clash from 9 pm local time at the National Stadium in Kingston. T&T is coming off a training camp in Miami where it lost two training matches. The team is captained by Shannon Gomez and coached by Derek King. Twelve countries will compete from January 9-24. Group A includes hosts Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Panama, the United States, and Guatemala. Group B contains Haiti, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, and El Salvador. Four teams will qualify for the 2015 Fifa Under 20 World Cup in New Zealand. T&T eyes Concacaf U-15 championship participation The Football Association will begin the preparation of a National Under 15 team for participation at the Concacaf 2015 F Boys Under-15 Championship which will take place in the Cayman Islands in October. Further information in relation to nationwide screening will follow in due course but it is expected that T&T will use the build-up and the tournament itself as a way of placing heavy emphasis on its youth development programme. This year is set to be filled with activities with the Concacaf Gold Cup, the start of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, the Concacaf U-17 and U-20 Men’s Championships, the CFU Club championship, a Concacaf-17 Women’s Championship among other tournaments on the schedule. Ten additional teams are expected to participate in 2015, which would bring 32 squads from the region to Cayman’s shores. Concacaf President Jeff Webb said the tournament would be crucial to the development of the region’s young players. ‘The Under 15 tournaments are especially important as those young players have an opportunity to build a foundation for their country’s youth leagues and represent their nations at international events,’ Webb said. ‘It also enables the football community to start scouting for new talent at an earlier age.’ Molino makes Sportsmax Top 5 for 2014 T&T international Kevin Molino was named by regional sports cable channel Digicel SportsMax among the top Five players in the Caribbean for 2014. Molino had an outstanding year for T&T, leading them to the final of the Caribbean Cup where they lost on penalty kicks to Jamaica. He was joint topscorer in the Finals with three goals. He also netted a hattrick in a 6-1 win over Dominican Republic in the semi-final phase to end the year year with six goals in ten appearances. Molino is getting ready for the upcoming American MLS season with Orlando City where he will line up alongside Brazilian star Kaka. Sportsmax’s other top players included Jamaica’s Andre Blake and midfielder Rudolph Austion, Haiti’s Kervens Belfort and Cuba’s Yenier Marquez. Jones described as ‘Drogba’ of Championship League T&T captain Kenwyne Jones has been described by his Cardiff City teammate Adam Le Fondre as the Didier Drogba of the English Championship. Jones, currently with ten goals for the season, has been a force for Cardiff and came in for praise from Le Fondre after the player netted his first goal for the club against Watford last month. ‘The gaffer (Russell Slade) wanted more of a physical presence in attack and nobody provides that better than Kenwyne. There isn’t a centre-half in Championship football who can dominate him,’ Le Fondre said. ‘There is not a better player in our league who is better at holding the ball up and he is brilliant in the air. Kenwyne did a tremendous job against Watford and I am buzzing to play alongside him because I know he is going to get up and create chances for me. ‘For me he is the Didier Drogba of Championship football.’ Shaun Fuentes is director, communications of the T&T Football Association Source:: Guardian Sports The post Nakhid’s son progressing at AU appeared first on Trinidad & Tobago Online. #trinidad
