Namakatti looks like a piece of chalk, but its bit harder than a regular chalk. Namakatti is made of solid clay. In India, we use it to apply tilak on our foreheads. A ‘U’ is drawn on the forehead of men and children as they offer prayers. This is known as ‘Namam’, the symbol for Lord Vishnu. Concentration (between the eyebrows - Bhroo) causes enoromous energy dissipation and camdanam is supposed to cool the heat. The pastes applied are considered cooling, and are applied to the ajna chakra, a concentration of spiritual energy on the forehead between the eyebrows. The white namam is also considered to bestow spiritual comfort and protection against demons, bad luck, and other evil forces. Namam is a sign that symbolizes that, we have completely surrendered to god. Each time we apply the tilak on our forehead, we are always reminded of that fact. Apart from religious beliefs, namakatti also serves as a medical aid in treating abscess in eyes. Eye abscess: Rub tilak with water and apply on the eye. Treats Pimples: when you have troubled skin after childbirth, here is a simple aid, just rub the stick with water on a stone and apply on pimple. If mixed with sandalwood its even more effective. Heat rash on Baby: Just apply the same paste as above (tilak and sandalwood) on rashes. Crush little thiruman (namakatti) and make it a paste using little warm water. Apply this mixture externally on your throat. It offers a great relief for sore throat. All these remedies will work on babies as its totally herbal and safe. Availability: Its available at any pooja store or stores near temples.
