Because law enforcement officers cannot be everywhere at the same time, security guards presence is needed at some specifics location to help protect property, assets, and people. Their mission is observe and report. Some skills are required before hiring unarmed or armed security officers. Qualifications and Skills : 1) Reading Comprehension: Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. 2) Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. 3) Good verbal communication skills: Because security guards are dealing with customers and clients on a daily basis, they should be able to communicate effectively, meaning accurately, with self-confidence and good articulation. 4) Good written communication skills: Professional security officers must have good written communication skills, for they will deal with reports, memos, electronic mail, or jobs description throughout their careers. They should be able to write in proper and good English practice active listening, and social perceptiveness. 5) Social Perceptiveness: Being aware of others reactions and understanding why they react as they do. 6) Monitoring: Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. 7) Observation and Memory: A sharp attention to detail and the ability to remember specific information are valuable skills for most security jobs. Security personnel must be keenly aware of their surroundings at all times and should notice almost instantly when something is amiss. An aptitude for quick and lasting memorization is beneficial, as well. For instance, memorizing a license plate number, facial features or other particulars can help detect and prevent criminal behavior. 8) Good judgment and decision making: The security guard must know how to deal with crisis, bad behavior, attack against assets, property, or people. In order to make the appropriate decision, he or she must have good judgment. Seconds count in many security jobs and you will likely experience situations that do not allow you to ask others for input. Security workers should be able to think on their feet and have good judgment so that they can make the best decision when time is of the essence. Hesitating before taking action or exercising poor judgment could turn a troublesome situation into a dangerous one. 9) Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. 10) Time Management: Managing ones own time and the time of others. 11) Coordination: Adjusting actions in relation to others actions. 12) Active Learning: Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. 13) Instructing: Teaching others how to do something. 14) Negotiation: Bringing others together and trying to reconcile differences. 15) Complex Problem Solving: Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. 16) Learning Strategies: Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things. 17) Management of Personnel Resources: Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job. 18) Good customer service experience: Security guards, in most cases, are the first person customers meet in a business whether it is a gate community, a school, or a court house. Therefore, they make the first or best impression regarding the company where they work at. In that case, only officers who have good customer service experience will make all the difference. 19) Physical Strength: In some work environments, security guards might be required to possess certain physical skills. At the very least, many security guards and similar positions must stand or walk for long periods. Other jobs might necessitate running after perpetrators, physically restraining suspects or preventing unauthorized 20) Military, police or security guard-related experience: All security guards will certainly go through additional training before receiving their badges and uniforms. However, the hiring process will be easier for those who have military, police, or security guard-related experience compare to that of newly licensed security guards. Officers who have worked in these fields before are familiar with the security guard methodology, which is deter, detect, observe, and report. They are better prepared to perform their duties. 21) Vehicle driving and defensive driving skills: A security officer must be legally authorized to drive car with a valid drivers license, and have defensive driving skills. That means, not only that person knows how to operate a vehicle, also he or she must be able to drive to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others. 22) Computers skills: It is difficult for one to fine job in this marketplace without proper computer knowledge. All security officers must comply with this requirement.
