Namibia Holds Workshop For Journalists In Preparation For Meeting On Desertification WINDHOEK (BERNAMA) --- With Namibia hosting COP 11 of the UNCCD in September this year, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism has organised a one-day training workshop for local journalists on Wednesday to prepare them for coverage of the meeting on desertification. Environmental Commissioner Teofilus Nghitila said in an invitation to the event on Monday that the ministry intended to build capacity among local journalists by offering training on the upcoming 11th Conference of Parties (COP) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The training will focus on implications of desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD). COP 11 takes place from Sept 16 to 27 in the Namibian capital. "Given the far-reaching implications of DLDD within sub-Saharan Africa and the ongoing situation in Namibia which is making efforts to combat this scourge, platforms such as COP are key to give due attention to addressing these issues. "Most importantly, the role of the media in disseminating information and assisting in the fight to combat DLDD is high on the agenda," Nghitila said. COP 11 will be convened under the theme "A stronger UNCCD for a Land-Degradation Neutral World". The conference will build upon the results of the second and third UNCCD scientific conferences, and review the progress after the completion of the first half of the 10-year strategy of the UNCCD (2008-2018). The event will also reflect the UNCCD vision of a way forward after the Rio 20 outcomes on land degradation, desertification and drought. -- BERNAMA
