Namibian community to venture into The Topnaar community has become a significant part of cultural tourism in Namibia. A number of tours to interact with the Topnaars are organised by tour operators and agencies in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, but according to a report released by the Legal Assistance Centre, these tours currently don’t benefit the Topnaar community. The report states: “More and more tourists are becoming interested in the Topnaar, thus the community should be trained in tourism. Tourism activities could be managed by the community in co-operation with the Gobabeb Research Centre.” A large area along the Kuiseb River has considerable potential for community-based tourism, but options for developing and exploiting this potential are severely limited by the fact that much of it lies in a proclaimed national park.
