Naming the dead One problem with the drone strikes the US engages in is that we don’t know if they are really succeeding in hitting terrorists, or militants, or whether they are really hitting civilians and others who mean the USA no ill harm. Drone strikes are justified by saying they protect America and are necessary in prosecuting the war against terrorism. But at the moment we simply take the word of the administration at face value that they are hitting the targets they say they are, that they are hitting targets that present a threat to the United States. Now the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has launched a project with the aim of finding out if this is really the case. Their naming the dead project aims to name all of the people who have been killed by drones in Pakistan along with as much biographical information as possible. This will then tell us if it is mostly militants or civilians who are being killed, and possibly whether the militants were really people who might have been a threat to the USA or the west.
