Namory Trawally 18 August near Banjul, The Gambia DEFECTS OF NORMALISATION –A SAD EPISODE IN OUR HISTORY “No man wins a war” but those who provoke a calamity have all to lose in most instances. The so-called Normalisation Committee stands out clear as major losers in the recently held Congress of the Gambian football family. Wary of the clinical counter-attacks launched by the very Constituency that commands the major support base, the Normalisation Committee lost all credibility in the realm of public certainty. Before the Congress, all assaults by the Normalisation Committee on the erroneously dissolved Executive Committee were debunked by the latter. As it was shamed by circumstances day in - day out, it hurriedly assembled an unqualified disciplinary committee (of Lawyers?) dictated to ban genuine Football Officials whose only “guilt” was to motivate its management staff for greater productivity. This swayed more public sympathy towards the banned officials. Regrettably, the Normalisation Committee could not gauge the public reaction to their ill-fated verdict. The nomination of Mr. Momodou Musa as a Presidential candidate had exposed the undignified defiance of the NC to greater public scrutiny. This decision withdrew the Normalisation Committee to its own shadow when cracks appeared in its camp. The Vice Presidential Candidate resigned amidst accusations that the Presidential Candidate was imposed on them. This high profile resignation was acknowledged as another curse on the Normalisation Committee. Being very much engaged in politicking, Members of the NC failed to respect the instruments of the GFF Constitution which were necessary for the good organization of the Congress. It must be borne in mind that the NC imposed this Constitution on the Clubs – the major stakeholders. For the organization of any Congress, a Notice, Agenda and Audited Accounts must be circulated to all Members some weeks (no need to be precise) before the date of the Congress. It was only on July 28th, 2013 that the Normalisation Committee circulated the Notice and the Agenda for the Congress to be held the following day. No Audited Accounts were distributed to Members. What a serious flaw in the implementation of a Constitution designed by the very people who have no respect for it. In fact, the reports by the Acting Secretary General and the Treasurer to the Congress bore every hallmark of a very unprofessional accounting procedure. The contradictions in the figures and the superfluous hypothesis in the nominal reports amazed even the supporters of the Normalisation Committee. Major decisions like the banning of officials of the previous Executive and its Senior Management and the appointments of General Secretary, Technical Director and others were not mentioned in even the Vice Chairman’s report. What can be deduced from these inadequacies is that the Normalisation Committee was surplus to its own requirements and that it had no respect for the Congress – the Supreme Authority of football in The Gambia. How can a Cabinet be formed before the election of a President? Not even a Legal person as a Member of the NC could have advised the Vice Chairman about the legality of the IEC conducting an election at a GFF Congress. Read through their handing over notes of 10th August 2013, no mention was made of the banning of the previous officials also. Should one consider this decision a serious one? It could be recalled that not even a letter was addressed to the banned officials conveying the decision from the Normalisation Committee. Every genuine Gambian and friends of Gambian football were moved to believe that these many unwarranted defects made this normalisation process a very murky chapter in the history of football in our Country. Playing by their rules, the Normalisation Committee was defeated by a conscientious constituency of football lovers who continue to cement its credibility as the force of good over evil. We thank Allah (SWT) that Truth has defeated falsehood. Reason has outshined deceit when well-meaning Gambian football officials decided to elect an Executive Committee very representative of the old order. They had to revert to the old order because of the many successes registered by the deposed Executive Committee and the unmerited treatment meted out to them. Seventeen months of unparalleled deception, bogus allegations of mismanagement, unreal stories of lack of a GFA Constitution, unretired imprests and Ghost Clubs, selfishly-designed and forced Constitution that connotes an unfortunate ellipsis (GFF), banning of officials who genuinely served Mother Gambia, imposing an unqualified candidate on the football family on the hour mark etc, have all been shelved in the dustbin of history by credible and committed people who will continue to raise standards in our game for The Gambia, Our Homeland.
