Nancy Alcox It’s time for a rant… Where to begin…Let’s see, I’m not on welfare or unemployment for starters. I don’t have a criminal record and at 53, this is my first involvement in a protest. I moved to the Bass River area a little over a year ago to enjoy the clean & quiet wilderness. This after spending the last three years taking care of my 8o yr old mother full time.(loved every minute of it) Now I’m spending all of my time & money doing the job the NB government is PAID to do, taking care of the environment in our beautiful province …YES, the environment DOES come before the economy. Today, November 27th, three of us went to the shale gas peaceful protest site on hwy 11. The last time I checked this is still our legal right, even being 20 meters away from all/any equipment, workers, thumpers etc… etc … We left the site and noticed we were being followed by one of the many RCMP cars in the area. They pulled us over once we took an off ramp and told the driver to stay in the truck. Low & behold, four RCMP are approaching us scary old folkies. The officer tells the driver he’s doing a document check and wants to see drivers license, registration & insurance card. Meanwhile, I’m not paying that much attention because it doesn’t have anything to do with me. I notice another office on my side of the truck but pay him no mind. At the same time, I’m feeling intimidated and surrounded. To my surprise, my friend in the back seat tells me he wants me to put my window down. The video takes over from this point of my story…. It’s hard to put into words how this made me feel. I’m a very happy & optimistic person, generally, and this episode left me disgusted. We keep telling ourselves how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful country; democratic, free, etc … etc… but I don’t feel that way right now! And yes…I want this video to get out there. I want other Canadians to realize we’re NOT living the dream …It’s becoming a nightmare … and, it’s FAR from over … P.S. I don’t begrudge the very young RCMP officer. He looked as uncomfortable with the whole ordeal as I felt. He probably didn’t sign up for this kind of citizen harassment and might even be a closet anti-fracker…
