Nancy Kerrigan On January 6, 1994 (twenty-one years ago today) - TopicsExpress

Nancy Kerrigan On January 6, 1994 (twenty-one years ago today) Nancy Kerrigan of Stoneham was practicing for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. These championships were to be used in part to determine the two female singles skaters that would represent the United States in the up-coming Olympic Games in Lillehammer (Feb, 1994). While leaving the ice, a man assaulted Kerrigan by clubbing her right knee with a police baton. The injuries forced her to drop out of the championships. The Olympic Selection Committee determined that Kerrigans many other skating accomplishments earned her one of the two coveted spots in Norway. In February, 1994 Kerrigan and rival Tonya Harding represented the U.S. at the Winter Olympic Games. The media was in a frenzy. Kerrigans attacker had confessed and told police that he was part of a plot involving Harding, her body guard and her husband. Because Harding had not been formally charged with a crime, she was allowed to compete. Harding did not skate well. Kerrigan skated a nearly flawless performance, earning her the silver medal. On March 16, 1994 Harding pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution of the attackers, avoiding jail time. On June 30, 1994 Harding was stripped of her 1994 World Figure Skating title and banned from USFSA (as skater or coach) for life. Happy Birthday today to our patients!
