Nanjangud is a temple town on the banks of the river Kapila - TopicsExpress

Nanjangud is a temple town on the banks of the river Kapila (Kabini), around 23 km away from the city of Mysore. The town is famous for Srikanteshwara Temple known as "Dakshina Kashi". In this Banana growing enclave, a popular variety of banana -‘Nanjanagoodu rasabale’ is famous. This banana evokes evokes incredible appreciation for its unique taste that tickle the taste-buds of people far and wide. The fruit hasa distinct aroma when ripes fully and has long shelf life as it will not perish even after two weeks after ripening! Nilambur is a town in the Malappuram district of Kerala in the valley of hills with forests. There are wildlife habitats, rivers, waterfalls and teak plantations in the forest. The town is situated close to the Nilgiris Forest Range under the Western Ghats on the banks of the Chaliyar River and lies in the Kozhokkode (Calicut) – Mysore road. The proposed Nilambur–Gudalur Road–Sulthan Bathery–Nanjangud railway line is a railway project is called as the Goldern I.T Corridor to create a broad gauge rail connection from the town of Nanjangud (Karnataka) to Nilambur (Kerala). This line will pass through the Wayanad district of Kerala and Nilagiri district of Tamilnadu. The proposal for this railway line originated from the public demands in early1881, still the line is not implemented! The main impediment is that the line has to pass through forested lands. Above all the feasibility was not certain. The 238 km long proposed line starting from Nanjangud, a town which is already having rail connectivity with the Mysore – Chamarajanagar ( M.G section now converted into B.G) has to pass through Madhur in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka,Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district of Kerala, and Devala in Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. Upon implementing this railway line linking with the, the existing Nilambur- Shoranur B.G line will enable an easy rail connectivity between rail terminals in Kerala with Mysore. Planning Commission had already sanctioned Rs. 3,384 crore towards the estimated project cost of this proposed railway. This line will save around 70 km towards Bangalore and 360 km towards Mysore from railway terminals of Kerala. Once the proposed line becomes reality there will be a major shift in the mode of transport for passengers as well as freight between kerala and Mysore. Taking into account the logistic movement currently in NH 212 and NH67, on shfting the mode to railways, the freight revenue will surpass and even would be multi-fold of the passenger revenue. The saturated motor traffic in NH-67 and NH-212 will get neutralized reducing environmental pollution, saving of valuable fuel and above all threat to wild animals. Kerala government must take initiative for the implementation of this important rail project by offering the best possible financial cooperation to Railways though not at par with Karnataka which had promised to share 50 percent of the cost. The state government must earmark adequate funds towards the same. Since the acquisition of properties will be just around 50 acres of land and no residents are to be rehabilitated for the stretch from Nilambur to the Kerala border at Sultan Bathery, let us hope that there will not be any opposition towards this developmental project in Kerala.
