Narendra Modi had been away from Gujarat for almost 6 years now. Politics had become some sort of game for entertainment in Gujarat, internal fights had increased then. The state of BJP in Gujarat during 2000-2001 had degraded. They lost confidence of people over two seats. This was a sort of warnin...g alarm to the party. In such state, the party leaders came to only one conclusion that Narendra Modi was the only hope. The story about how Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat is also very interesting. On 1st October 2001, congress minister Madhavrao Scindia and Gopal, a camera man from “Aaj Tak” TV along with a few more died in helicopter crash. Gopal was very close and good of Modiji. Modiji grieved as he got the news. As soon as he came to know that the final rituals are going to take place in Delhi, he immediately left to bid final farewell to his friend. As he reached, he got a call from PM Vajpayeeji’s office. Vajpayeeji: कहा हो? Modiji: स्मशान Vajpayeeji: वहा क्या कर रहे हो? Modiji: मित्र गोपाल के अंतिम संस्कारक्रिया में आया हु| Vajpayeeji: ठीक है| शाम को मुझे मिलकर जाना| Saying so Vajpayeeji ceased the call. Modiji went to Vajpayeeji’s house in the evening. Vajpayeeji (हस्ते हस्ते मझाक में): दिल्ली में पंजाबी खा-खाकर काफ़ी अच्छी तबियत बना ली है| अब थोड़े पतले होने की झरूरत है| जल्दी जाओ| Modiji: कहा जाना है? Vajpayeeji: गुजरात जाओ| Modiji: मुझे सिर्फ़ गुजरात की ज़िम्मेदारी लेनी है या और राज्यो की ज़िम्मेदारी भी साथ है? By saying “गुजरात जाओ|” what Vajpayeeji meant was, become the CM of Gujarat. But what Modiji understood was that he had to go to Gujarat to take up the responsibility of the party and work for the Sangathan. Vajpayeeji: नही नही... आपको चुनाव लड़ना है| अब तक आपने दूसरो की जीत के लिए बहुत परिश्रम कर लिया, अब अपनेआप के लिए करो| Modiji: चुनाव लड़ना मेरे लिए असंभव है| आप कहोगे तो महीने के दस दिन गुजरात जाके संगठन की ज़िम्मेदारी संभाल लूँगा| पर राजनीति नही| में पिछले 6 सालों से गुजरात से दूर रहा हूँ| तो अभी वाहा क्या चल रहा है मुझे कुछ भी पता नही| और तो और मेने आज तक गुजरात विधानसभा या मुख्यमंत्री के ऑफीस मे कदम नही रखा! में वाहा जाके क्या करूँगा? Vajpayeeji: तो में जब दिल्ली आया था, यहा में किसिको जानता था क्या? Vajpayeeji kept persuading him and Modiji kept denying giving all foolish excuses possible in the world! Then Modiji got a message asking him to meet Advaniji at his place that night. Advaniji: अटलजी क्या बोले? Modiji: क्या? Advaniji: देखो, पक्ष के सभी नेताओ ने मिलकर आपके लिए ये फ़ैसला लिया है| Modiji: लेकिन इस कार्य के लिए में सक्षम नही हू| Some 5 days passed with all the people trying to persuade Modiji. Finally he had to surrender to their decision. And on 7th October 2001, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The first thing he did after coming to Gujarat as CM was, he called a meeting of all the ministers and adhikaaris and said, “In this match of fixed over, I require such batsmen who are capable of scoring high quickly and efficiently. To reach up the pinnacle three qualities are of great importance – EFFICIENCY, DISCIPLINE & INTEGRITY. If at all any ministers are incapable of performing their duties well, they would be dismissed from the cabinet.” If at all it would have been someone else to be sworn-in to such a high post in a state, the person would have celebrated the moment. But see the dedication in Modiji, his humbleness with respect to the post, his sense of responsibility towards his duty and people. Well he rightly says, “I became CM by accident. For me CM=Common Man”. But in 2014 Modiji will become PM by people’s choice; by OUR choice
