Narragansett Beer - Our Own New England Beer If you grew up in Waterville and went to Waterville High School in the late 60’s as I did you might recall having a “few” Narragansett Beers. Even though most of us were not able to buy beer at the time, you could always find a store that would “look the other way” when presenting “fake” ID’s. Recall Sunday sales were illegal so we would go over to Winslow to “Roland’s Market” and he would place some Narragansett’s in a brown paper bag and we would meet him in the back of his store to pay for it. Ha The Narragansett Brewing Company was founded in Cranston, Rhode Island, in 1890. The brewery officially closed on July 31, 1981. During the 1940s Theodor Geisel better known as Dr. Seuss was hired by the Narragansett Brewing Company to create advertising pieces for the company. In the 60’s was the number one selling brand in New England & Maine. 1955 Narragansett beer market share was 65%! Advertising slogan, Hi, Neighbor, have a Gansett!, most famously uttered by Boston Red Sox announcer Curt Gowdy. Last time in Waterville for a visit, couple of high school buddies and I went to Hannaford and picked up “a rack a poundahs”. If from Waterville, you will know what that means.
