Nasiru Yauri This is yet another sad, tragic day in Nigeria. Yesterday, I excused some 10 students from my Masters in Accounting class in ABU Zaria. They were to attend the aptitude test into the Immigration Service in Abuja today. I still dont know whats the fate of those students. Events at the various centers today are, to say the least, devastating. 7 candidates died in a stampede in Abuja (confirmed by the National Hospital, Abuja), 4 died in Port Harcourt (confirmed by Braithwaite Memorial Hospital, PH), 2 died in Minna (reported by Daily Trust Newspapers), 3 died in Benin, and 2 died in Kano (Benin and Kano cases partially confirmed). I noted that the Nigeria Immigration Service had 3,000 vacancies but allowed 2 million young men and women to register for the aptitude test. Why? Which management expert would recommend a recruitment exercise of 2 million candidates for 3,000 vacancies? The candidates were asked to converge on some venues for a one-day exercise. Why? How did they plan to manage a crowd of 2 million applicants in one day in less than 1000 venues? Apart from these unanswered questions, todays tragedy is another sad (but unnecessary) pointer to the poor macroeconomic management in Nigeria. It points to the gross unemployment and biting poverty in which young Nigerians live. It begs for answers to the leadership question and reiterates the need to curb corruption and channel Nigerias resources to the areas of need-especially in youth unemployment and poverty reduction. Federal, State, and Local Governments, and leaders of Nigerias private sector are all culprits in thiss case. The blood of young Nigerians who die every day in penury and in search of daily livelihood stains their hands. Certainly, there is judgement hanging on their heads!
