Naso, a verb for the action of carrying or raising up, refers to the purpose of the Torah and of the work of the kohan’im, to raise up the people. The time of Naso usually falls just before, or sometimes just after, the festival of Shavuot, which commemorates the historical receiving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. In a sense, Shavuot celebrates the marriage ceremony that then took place between the people and the Divine, with the Torah being the ketuba, or ritual marriage contract. There is a certain power that connects us with this energy of Shavuot that we can draw on for the whole year. It has to do with the power of Torah study at the deepest level, which goes significantly beyond the cur- rent traditional scholarly study of the Torah.
