Nation leaders and Celebrities Pray For the Philippines (ASEAN COMMUNITY) Jared Leto led a minutes silence at the MTV Europe Music Awards for the victims of typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in the Philippines. The rocker—whose band 30 Seconds To Mars won the award for Best Alternative act—asked for the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam to be quiet for 60 seconds in remembrance of the estimated 10,000 people killed by the devastating storm. From Josh Duhamel and David Archuleta to Rihanna and George Clooney – many of the big foreign stars have been tweeting messages of love and support for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) that ravaged the Philippines, particularly the Visayas. Among those who first took to Twitter was American alternative-pop rock band OneRepublic, who “can’t believe we were there yesterday afternoon (Nov. 6)” for a concert in Manila last week. @OneRepublic: “To all our Filipino fans- love u guys, be safe, take cover, God speed.. We can’t believe we were there yesterday afternoon. This is crazy… Sending our thoughts and prayers to the victim’s families of the devastating typhoon in the Philippines.” RnB Princess Rihanna, who also held a show in town in September, told her Navy fanbase to “please keep the people of The Philippines in your prayers!!! I was just there and this truly breaks my heart!!!” Actor Josh Duhamel of “Transformers” film series also said that he is “Praying for the Philippines.” Half-Filipina singer Jessica Sanchez was also active in the micro-blogging site with a series of tweets on the disaster over the weekend. @JessicaESanchez: “Praying for the Philippines right now and wishing everyone safety from Typhoon Haiyan!” Sanchez followed it up with, “I am praying for the Philippines and all my Filipino Blujays this morning in the wake of this horrendous storm! Be safe and stay strong! The news from the Philippines this morning is heartbreaking!” also urging followers to “find a way to help!” International recording artists Marie Digby and David Archuleta, who, at some point, have made the Philippines their home also called for prayers. @mariedigby: “Keeping The Philippines in my thoughts during this difficult and dangerous time… Hoping everyone stays safe ♥” @DavidArchie: “Prayers for our friends in the Philippines and all the areas being affected by Typhoon Haiyan. (Team Archie).” Singers-songwriters Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles were also among those who hopped aboard the sympathy train. @joshgroban: “My heart is heavy for the people of the Philippines tonight. Devastating.” @SaraBareilles: “Sending love to the Philippines. Tragic and powerful typhoon and major loss of life. Keeping that entire region in my prayers.” Even Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s rival Floyd Mayweather had his “thoughts and prayers (to) everyone in the Philippines.” John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State On behalf of the people of the United States, I offer our deepest condolences and solidarity as you wrestle with the devastation and loss of life that accompanied Super Typhoon Haiyan. The United States stands ready to help, our embassies in the Philippines and Palau are in close contact with your governments, and our most heartfelt prayers are with you. Pope Francis I ask all of you to join me in prayer for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan / Yolanda especially those in the beloved islands of the Philippines, the pope tweeted. Meanwhile, actor George Clooney said to Associated Press during the Britannia Awards that he was following the news about Haiyan, describing it as “a terrible disaster.” “We did the Golden Globes a week before we did the Haiti telethon and we were able to sort of rally some troops around and we’ll see what goes on from here and see what we’re able to do. It’s just happened a day ago so we’re figuring it out,” Clooney related on Saturday in LA, California. by: Laurence Lorie (Admin Pilipinas)
