National Bat Week is coming! Strange coverings lie above shafts at the Quincy Mine. These fascinating gates were designed to allow bats to continue to use old mines. Cave dwelling-bats are susceptible to White-nose Syndrome, a fungus that inhabits dark moist areas. It awakens the bats while they hibernate and the bats, in turn, start using fat reserves meant for survival throughout winter. Unable to replenish this energy, due to the lack of insects in winter, the bats end up perishing. Almost 100% mortality has been reported in some infected areas. By using precautions and keeping undisturbed dwellings available for bats, we are hoping to at least slow down the progression of this disease.
