National Chocolate Cake Day is our third chocolate day so far this year. Great chocolate cake comes in many forms. I can recommend Bakery Nouveau, Simply Desserts, New Renaissance Cakes, and 15th Street Bakery as great places to start looking for the very best chocolate cake. Most of the other holidays today are pretty somber and serious. The lightest one is World Leprosy Day to remind all of us that Hansens Disease (Leprosy) has be pretty much eliminated in most of the developed world. Sadly, its still far to common in impoverished nations in the developing world. It wont take a miracle cure to eliminate it, all we need to do is provide adequate nutrition and sanitation to people living in poverty. Today is also International Holocaust Memorial Day in memory of the victims of genocide from World War II in the hope we can learn from our past tragedy and prevent future genocidal behavior. Never forget. Finally, its the Christian Feast Day of Saints Angela Merici, Devota (virgin martyr), and Sava, the patron saints of orphans, Monaco, and hospice. On this days day in history in 1302 Dante was exiled, in 1606 the trial of Guy Fawkes began, in 1785 the University of Georgia was founded, in 1825 Indian Territory was created, in 1870 the first college sorority was founded, in 1880 Edison patented the incandescent lamp, in 1888 the National Geographic Society was founded, in 1894 the first intercollegiate basketball game was played, in 1918 the first Tarzan film premiered, in 1924 Lenin was pickled, in 1948 the first tape recorder went on sale, in 1951 the first nuclear test was detonated in Nevada, in 1961 Sing Along with Mitch premiered, in 1964 Introducing the Beatles was released, in 1967 the Apollo 1 tragedy occurred and the Outer Space Treaty was signed, in 1970 the PG rating was introduced, in 1973 the Vietnam War officially ended, in 1976 Laverne & Shirley premiered, in 1982 Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opened on Broadway, in 1984 Michael Jackson caught fire, in 1993 the Akebono Taro became the first foreign-born Sumo Yokozuna, and in 1997 Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus opened on Broadway.
