National Day of Action: Heads in the Sand. Our Government is - TopicsExpress

National Day of Action: Heads in the Sand. Our Government is not just doing nothing to reduce emissions, but its taking a number of steps to actively increase them, and destroying our beautiful environment along the way: • Opening up large tracts of land for mining • Opening up huge areas of our oceans for deep sea drilling • Encouraging seabed mining by changing legislation, and refusing to move to stop such activities to protect our precious Maui Dolphins. • Talking again about “streamlining” the RMA (to make it easier for companies to get permission to mine). • Using taxpayer money to subsidise companies to pay for carbon credits (and having one of the weakest ETS schemes in the world). • Negotiating a TPPA that may allow corporations to sue the Government if our environmental rules are too strong. This could see us being sued for banning mining – or even for taking meaningful action on climate change. In December, Climate Change Ministers Simon Bridges and Tim Groser will be in Lima for the international climate change talks (UNFCCC). There, we expect our Government to do its usual job of undermining the talks, and using the so-called “lack of action” from others as an excuse for not strengthening our own climate policies at home. This Government has its head in the sand about mining and climate change. So let’s make sure they know how we feel. Coal Action Network invites you to join us as we collectively stick our heads in the sand to salute our Government’s attitude to our future.
