National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell defended the Washington Redskins’ nickname in a letter to members of Congress who recently complained that the name is a racial slur and should be changed. Goodell said in the June 5 letter addressed to Congressional Native American Caucus co-leaders Tom Cole and Betsy McCollum, that the name Redskins was never meant to denigrate or offend Native Americans, and “represented a positive meaning distinct from any disparagement that could be viewed in some other context.”tv.msnbc/2013/06/13/nfl-commissioner-defends-redskins-team-name-in-letter-to-congress/
