National Forecast Aug .21, 2013 3:17 pm Midwest - A cold front slides southward through the region with showers and thunderstorms. - Most of the activity Thursday will stretch from Nebraska eastward to Ohio. - A few thunderstorms could be strong to severe with hail and gusty winds. - Thursday highs in the 90s from the central and southern Plains to the mid Mississippi Valley Thursday. - North of the front it will be cooler with highs mostly in the 80s from the Dakotas down to the Ohio Valley. - Some 70s for highs from northern Minnesota to the upper peninsula of Michigan Thursday. South - Scattered showers and thunderstorms Thursday, mainly around the Gulf and Southeast coastal regions. - Drier conditions can be expected from Arkansas through the Tennessee Valley to the southern Appalachians. - Highs in the 80s to around 90 are expected across the Southeast and Florida with 90s to near 100 degrees across parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, the southern Plains and Texas. Northeast - An approaching cold front will trigger showers and thunderstorms from the St. Lawrence valley of northern New York down through western Pennsylvania to West Virginia Thursday. - Showers and thunderstorms should approach coastal areas on Thursday evening. - Warm and humid conditions with highs mainly in the 80s Thursday. - Highs around 90 Thursday in the Baltimore-Washington area. - Cooler and less humid air will move into the region behind the cold front Thursday night. - Most of the region can look forward to a pleasant weekend. West - An upper low moves inland through the Northwest and northern Rockies through Thursday. - Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected with the low. - Thursday the main storm threat extends from north California through west Montana. - Clouds, increased moisture and rain from the thunderstorms could bring some relief to firefighting efforts in the Northwest and north Rockies. - However, lightning from the thunderstorms could spark additional fires. - Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain likely from east/north Arizona and west New Mexico to Wyoming Thursday. - High temperatures range from the 60s and 70s along the coast to the 80s and 90s inland and 100 to 115 degrees in the deserts. - Increasing moisture could lead to heavy rain/flash flooding over parts of the Southwest by Sunday/Monday.
