National Forecast Jan .31, 2014 West - Precipitation begins to diminish for the Pacific Northwest today, but still some lingering rain and snow showers. - Snow showers pick-up some southern Montana to northern Wyoming into tonight with light accumulations. - Winter Storm Maximus spreads more robust snow eastward from the Sierra Nevada to Colorado today. - Total snowfall from the storm of 12 to 24 inches is likely by tonight in the highest elevations. - Snowfall up to 8 inches is possible in the lower elevations. - Snow diminishes for Denver area this morning, then picks up again into tonight. - Light amounts of rain and snow pass through the higher elevations of Arizona and New Mexico today. - Gusty winds across the Southwest with plenty of blowing dust. - Chilly highs in the 30s and 40s from the Northwest to Colorado. - Cooler 50s and 60s from Southern California across the Southwest. - Highs in the 20s for higher elevations from Montana to Colorado. Midwest - Winter Storm Maximus will impact parts of the region with snow and ice straight through Saturday. - Todays snow band stretches from Nebraska and northern Kansas through to Illinois, Indiana and much of Ohio. - Accumulations light today with the initial snow band, generally an 1 or less. - A much greater threat of snow occurs Saturday from northeast Kansas to Michigan and northern Ohio. - Snow accumulations over 6 inches are possible, including Chicago and Detroit on Saturday. - Ice becomes a possibility today, tonight and Saturday from southeast Kansas to central portions of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. - Significant icing is possible from central Missouri to central Indiana. - High temperatures today will be in the single digits in eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota. - Highs in the 20s across the lower Great Lakes - Highs in the 30s from the central Plains through the Ohio Valley. - Another significant winter storm may impact the same areas Tuesday into Wednesday. South - Much of the region will enjoy a dry and warmer Friday as the snow completely melts across the South. - Scattered rain showers are expected from Arkansas to western sections of Tennessee and Kentucky and southern Florida. - Rain and showers still occur throughout the Florida Peninsula as a cold front drops through. - Highs in the 40s from Virginia to the western Carolinas. - Highs in the 50s across much of the Southeast. - Highs in the 70s to near 80 across much of Texas and southern Florida Friday. - Next storm brings all rain showers to the region this weekend, especially on Sunday. - As colder air dives into the southern Plains, some light ice and snow southern Oklahoma into northwest Texas. Northeast - A bit of light snow is possible for western Pennsylvania and western New York today, but most areas stay dry. - Conditions will be dry today from New England through the Middle Atlantic region. - Todays highs in the 20s and 30s from New York and New England to central Pennsylvania. - Highs in the 40s across much of the Middle Atlantic region
