National Forecast Mar .12, 2014 Midwest - Snow, some heavy, continues across northern Indiana, northern Ohio and southeast Michigan through this morning. - The snow tapers off and ends from west to east across the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley during the late morning and early afternoon hours. - Rain may end as a brief period of snow in north and east Kentucky. - Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are likely in northern Indiana, northern Ohio and southern Michigan including Detroit and Cleveland. - Accumulations of 3 to 8 inches are likely in northern and central Illinois. - It will be windy and much colder in the Mississippi Valley. - Dry and breezy conditions occur across the Plains. - Highs in the 10s and 20s occur in Minnesota, east Iowa, Wisconsin, north Illinois, north Indiana and Michigan. - Chilly highs in the 30s and 40s occur in the eastern Dakotas, west Iowa, northeast Missouri, central Illinois, central Indiana and north and central Ohio. - Morning highs in the 50s and 60s occur in the Ohio Valley and Kentucky, but temperatures tumble back into the 30s during the afternoon. - Highs in the 50s occur from the central and western Dakotas to Kansas. Northeast - Winter Storm Vulcan charges into the region producing a band of heavy snow in west and north New York and northern New England Wednesday and Wednesday night. - Rain changes to snow in west and north Pennsylvania, south and east-central New York and central New England during the day Wednesday. - An icy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain continues from east-central New York through southern Vermont, southern New Hampshire and coastal Maine late Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening. - The icy mix then changes over to snow before ending Wednesday night. - Snow comes to an end from west to east across Upstate New York and New England Thursday. - Total snow accumulation of 1 to 5 inches occurs from southwest Pennsylvania to northern Massachusetts. - Snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is forecast from northwest Pennsylvania to coastal Maine. - Accumulations of 12 to 24 inches are possible from western New York to interior Maine. - Vulcan produces rain and thunderstorms from the Virginias to southern New England during the day Wednesday. - Severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are possible in southern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and central and eastern Virginia. - Rain may end as a brief period of snow from eastern Pennsylvania to eastern Massachusetts with accumulations less than an inch. - Warm highs in the 60s and 70s occur from southeast Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey southward to Virginia. - Mild highs in the 50s occur from West Virginia to New York City. - Colder highs in the 40s stretch from western Pennsylvania to southern New England. - Cold highs in the 20s and 30s occur in Upstate New York and northern New England. South - Rain, showers and thundershowers are likely in Tennessee, the Southeast and northern and central Florida from Winter Storm Vulcan Wednesday. - A few thunderstorms may become strong and produce gusty winds in central and east North Carolina Wednesday afternoon. - Snow showers and flurries are likely in central and eastern Tennessee and the southern Appalachian Mountains behind Vulcans cold front very late Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening. - Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the Smoky Mountains and southern Appalachians. - It will be colder and breezy in the lower Mississippi Valley, southern Plains and Texas. - High temperatures in those areas will be in the 50s and 60s. - Highs will be in the 60s and 70s across the Southeast and 70s and 80s in Florida. West - It will be dry across the entire region Wednesday. - Santa Ana winds occur in Southern California into Wednesday afternoon. - Sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph and gusts over 60 mph are likely in the mountains and near and below the passes and canyons in the mountains. - Winds should diminish during the later afternoon and evening hours. - Warm temperatures and low humidity combine with the strong winds to produce very high fire danger across Southern California. - Strong and gusty winds are also likely in and around the mountains of southern Nevada, Arizona and western New Mexico Wednesday. - Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts over 40 mph are expected. - Highs in the 40s and 50s are forecast from Montana and Idaho south to northern Arizona and northern New Mexico. - Highs in the 50s, 60s and 70s occur in the Northwest, northern California and southern New Mexico. - Warm highs in the 70s and 80s for Southern California, southern Nevada and southern Arizona
