National Grid’s Smart Bay with IEC 61850 Process Bus Has been Successfully Put into Service. On November 30th 2012, after two weeks’ site commissioning, National Grid’s 400kV smart bay project successfully put into service. his smart bay is connecting Ratcliff on Soar substation and Drakelow substation in United Kingdom. It adopts NR Electric’s innovative process bus solution with IEC 61850-9-2 Sampling Value and IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE for time-critical message (tripping/closing). As well, the station bus with IEC 61850-8-1 MMS, GOOSE and SNTP is also provided. The solution integrates PCS-221 Merging Unit and PCS-222 Circuit Breaker Controller which are installed in outdoor cabinet, as well as PCS-902 Distance Protection, PCS-931 Current Differential Protection and PCS-9705 Bay Control Unit which are installed in relay room. NR’s rugged Gigabit Switch PCS-9882 is used for both process bus and station bus. The purpose of these Merging Units is to convert the analog current/voltage acquired from the conventional CT/VT to the digital data and dispatch the digital current/voltage to the Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) in the relay room via the IEC 61850-9-2 Sampling Value (SV) over Ethernet.
