National Trauma Institute Appoints New Officers and Board Members The National Trauma Institute appointed new leaders and welcomed four new members to its Board of Directors this month. Gregory J. (“Jerry”) Jurkovich, MD, FACS, assumes the Board Chair position, replacing Donald H. Jenkins, MD, FACS, who served in the position for two years and moves to the Vice-Chair position to provide continuity for NTI’s advocacy efforts. Basil A. Pruitt, Jr., MD, FACS, replacing long-serving M. Margaret Knudson, MD, FACS, begins a two-year term as Science Committee Chair, while Gregory J. Beilman, MD, FACS, succeeds David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS in the Science Committee Vice-Chair role. Newly appointed at-large members serving three-year terms, Drs. Martin Croce, Eric Elster, Nicole Gibran and Wayne Meredith join the 24-member board during an exciting period in the organization’s evolution. With its first funded studies closing and beginning to return and publish meaningful results, NTI now turns to advocate for development of two major trauma research infrastructure projects: a National Trauma Research Repository and a Trauma Clinical Trials Network. “We’re very optimistic about acquiring the funding for both a repository and a clinical trials network,” said Board of Directors Chair Jerry Jurkovich. “Our new board members and leaders are sure to add influence and enthusiasm to our efforts.” NTI works in coalition with like-minded organizations to achieve rapid advances in traumatic injury treatment that can save lives. The organization’s leaders believe that a robust research infrastructure is long over-due, pointing to a 40-year history of federally acknowledged research funding inadequacies. New Board Officers: Board Chair: Jerry J. Jurkovich, MD Dr. Jurkovich is Chief of Surgery at Denver Health Medical Center, and the Bruce M. Rockwell Distinguished Professor of Trauma Surgery and Vice-Chairman for the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He received an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University and his MD degree from the University of Minnesota. He has chaired the AAST Committee on the Acute Care Surgeon and is a recent Past President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Science Committee Chair: Basil A. Pruitt, Jr., MD Dr. Pruitt is the Dr. Ferdinand P. Herff Chair in Surgery at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas. He has also been Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences since 1978. He graduated from Harvard College in 1952; and in 1957 earned his MD from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Pruitt has served on 11 editorial boards, including Associate Editor and Editor of the Journal of Trauma. He has authored and co-authored over 440 published papers, 172 textbook chapters, and 13 books and monographs. He presently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Trauma Society. Science Committee Vice-Chair: Gregory J. Beilman, MD Dr. Beilman is Chief of General Surgery and Division Head of Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He completed medical school at the University of Kansas and surgery training at the University of Kansas in Wichita. He manages an active translational research program, with over 130 peer-reviewed publications. As a Colonel in the Army Reserves he has deployed five times, serving during his last deployment as the CENTCOM Joint Theater Trauma Director in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Beilman’s research interests include improving process and outcomes in critically-ill patients. New Board Members: Martin Croce, MD Dr. Croce is Professor of Surgery and Chief, Division of Trauma and Critical Care at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, as well as Medical Director of the Presley Regional Trauma Center. He completed his medical education and residency at UTHSC-Memphis, and a trauma fellowship at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami. His research interests include blunt cerebral injuries, splenic injury and VAP. Eric A. Elster, MD, CAPT, MC, USN Dr. Elster earned undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of South Florida in Tampa as a recipient of the U.S. Navy’s Health Professionals Scholarship Program. CAPT Elster now serves as the 3rd Chairman of the Norman M. Rich Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He has published more than 100 scientific manuscripts. Nicole Gibran, MD Dr. Gibran is Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington and Director of the UW Medicine Regional Burn Center at Harborview Medical Center. She completed her medical degree and residency in surgery at Boston University. Her research includes the role of nerves in wound repair, genetic influences on scarring, and long-term functional outcomes following burn injuries. Wayne Meredith, MD Dr. Meredith is Chairman of the Department of General Surgery at Wake Forest University. He completed his medical education at WFU, and his residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals. Dr. Meredith is a Past-President of AAST.
