National Union of Somali Journalists - NUSOJ· Journalist behind bars in Central Somalia for reporting local Youth organization’s Elections Mogadishu, December 20, 2014 The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns the arrest of Television journalist in the town of Beletwein in HIiraan region by the Governor of Hiiraan region. The latest episode of violations against the press in Somalia. The journalist, Osman Adan Areys, the correspondent of Somali Channel Television in Hiiraan region and a recipient of NUSOJ’s Safety and Conflict Sensitive Reporting, was briefly arrested on Wednesday 17 December, 2014 and again arrested on Thursday 18 December on the orders of the orders of the governor, Abdifatah Hassan Ahmed, according to witnesses and local journalists. Mr. Areys was accused of reporting elections of the Independent local Youth Organization that the organizations’ chairman Mohamed Abdullahi Buraale reportedly lost in the election and then aired on the Somali Channel Television. However, this infuriates the organization’s chairman and carried out a plot for his arrest on Wednesday. However, he was released with the orders of deputy chairman for Political and Security affairs, Mohamed Ibrahim Abdullahi. On Thursday, the Governor of Hiiraan region, Abdifatah Hasan Afrah issued a degree for the arrest of Osman Aden Areys and still remains in Central Police Station in Beletwein for the third day. The National Union of Somali Journalists condemns the arrest of the journalist who only reported elections on local youth organization and calls for his immediate release. “We are outraged by the arrest of our colleague and condemn the act of arrest meant to intimidate the journalist.” Mohamed Ibrahim, NUSOJ Secretary General said, “We demand the journalist’s unconditional release and respect for the granted freedoms of the expression of expression and that of the press.”
