National Youth Parliament gets new speaker Africa » Gambia Tuesday, September 17, 2013 The National Youth Parliament (NYP) The Gambia Saturday elected a new Speaker to be at the helm of affairs for the next three years. The newly elected speaker, Hon. Samba Bah, graduated fromthe University of The Gambia and is currently working with the country’s highest institute of learning. Hon. Bah succeeds Hon. Siaka Dibba who was elected in May but left for studies in August. It could be recalled that the National Youth Parliament held its General Assembly in May during which a new executive was elected. Speaking in an interview with the Daily Observer, Hon. Bah revealed that he is a seasoned youth activist who rose through the ranks of the National Youth Parliament from being a Regional Parliamentarian, to a Regional Deputy Speaker and Speaker and now the National Speaker. He also served in different youth organizations which include; Bawrigal Youth Association and Saamasang Youth and Children Development Association (SAYCDA). Bah also headed the University of The Gambia Students Service Learning Association, as well as the sports director for the UTG Students Union. “I feel honoured to take this responsibility. There is not much to be said, I just want to tell everyone that work continues. We have a lot of things to address and I am not changing as a person nor am I re-inventing the wheel. We’ve been working hard as an organization, all we need is refocusing,” Bah emphasized. The newly elected speaker of the NYP noted that National Youth Parliament The Gambia is the representative network of young people that seeks to address issues affecting youths. The NYP comprises of Seven Regional Youth Parliamentarians. Each Regional Youth Parliament has 30 members who serve as representatives from their respective District Youth Parliaments and Community Based Organizations in each region. “The NYP is aimed at inculcating responsible citizenship in the minds of young people and enhances their capabilities to participate effectively and efficiently in national development,” he stated.
