National Zookeeper Week: Celess and Eddie Keepers get creative when encouraging animals to participate in their own health care. To prepare 16-year-old sea otter Eddie for his routine X-rays, Celess Zinda coaxes him to momentarily sit still in a plexiglass cart topped with a dummy radiograph machine. Practicing this behavior with Eddie – famous for his basketball arthritis therapy – also provides mental stimulation. Like other keepers with their animals, Celess stays by Eddie’s side for encouragement and comfort when vet staff perform the real x-ray.
