Nationality is what you perceive yourself to be based on a mix of : - your citizenship - where you live, - where you have lived in the past and your ancestral roots - most of all what you want to be ! In the case of my daughters and many more second generation: - their citizenship : America - where they live : America - where they have lived in the past and their ancestral roots : America and Indonesia - most of all what they want to be : an American With 4 component of America and only 1 component of Indonesia, how I can mold them to identify themselves as an Indonesian ? I will do injustice if I do that nor that I have the right to do that. The compromise is by identifying them as an Indonesian - American. The consequence is by facilitating their need as an Indonesian - American and helping them thrive in their own term as a Diaspora. If only we are willing to learn from the experiences of many other immigrant communities, the Philippine America, the Italian American, the German American etc. and then we can see which community is thriving with their youth achievement and which community losing their youth. Why we need to adamantly invent our own wheels and go through all those troubles to see the result, if we can see the end result by learning from the past experiences of others who already been there done that.
