Nations and nation-states are neither primordial nor eternal. They are artifacts of the historical process, and this often involves the play of power on the international stage. I suppose it is good to remind ourselves of that before we start soaking up the Western narrative on what Russia is doing in Crimea. And yes, it is also good to remind ourselves of that as we deal with the Bully across the South China Sea. If we do not embark on a long-term plan to acquire the means to keep what we consider to be ours, to make good our claims, then we will eventually have our territorial sea reshaped in a manner not of our own choosing.
