Nations are selective in telling their histories. They dwell on - TopicsExpress

Nations are selective in telling their histories. They dwell on successes. They have heroes with whom the people proudly identify. How different our psalm! Its story is of the persistent failures and offences of the former generations; only [Yahweh] in [God’s] goodness could have persevered with them. These tales of the past were always a window into the present. The characterization of the ancient conduct always reflected the storyteller’s insight into his own and his people’s heart. In a solemn moment of assembly before the Lord, the singer makes confession of the unworthiness of the people to which the worshippers belong, the entire people throughout the generations. The ancient incidents in his song illuminate the lack of trust and devotion still prevalent. But they also reveal the perseverance of God. Beginning and ending with the praise of God, and finding a path through frankness of confession, the singer rests all his hope in the one known from ancient times, the God of mighty deeds, faithfulness and compassion. --J.
