Native forest logging has been a drain on the public purse for long enough - its time for a change. If you feel like writing a letter to the editor at the Herald Sun about today’s story here’s some points you could make: - All political parties contesting Victoria’s November state election should commit to modernising the Victorian paper industry by shifting out of native forests, and into existing plantations. - Export woodchippers in NSW have finally had enough, and wont buy wood from VicForests anymore. Rather than scrabbling around for another buyer, this is a great opportunity to improve management in our state forests. - Logging these forests does not make enough of a profit - $802,000 on $106.3 million in revenue in the 2012-2013 financial year is a tiny return to share between all Victorians. - This state election we need a policy commitment to create the Great Forest Park - the real solution to VicForests financial woes. - A promise of $2 million profit from VicForests next financial year isn’t convincing. Enough is enough. Its time to manage these forests for water, tourism, and carbon values - which will provide a greater return on investment than simply logging these forests for woodchips. >> Lodge letters to the editor at heraldsun.au/news/opinion/letter-to-the-editor
