Tooth-decay can be prevented by regular consumption of apples as they possess a mouth cleansing property that no other fruit possesses, and taken after meals, they have the same effect as a tooth brush in cleansing the teeth, with the added advantage that the acid content, aside from its nutritive value, is of assistance in promoting the flow of saliva in the mouth, which is also beneficial to the teeth. The acid of the apple also exerts an antiseptic influence upon the germs present in the mouth and teeth when it is thoroughly chewed. Apples are thus regarded as a natural preserver of the teeth and should be taken in all tooth troubles 2. Chewing a carrot immediately after food kills all the harmful germs in the mouth. It cleans the teeth, removes the food particles lodged in the crevices and prevents bleeding of the gums and tooth decay. 3. Chewing fresh groundnuts with a pinch of salt strengthens the gum, cures stomatitis, kills harmful bacteria and safeguards the enamel of the teeth. The mouth should, however, be washed with water after eating groundnuts. 4. Due to its high content of vitamin C, lemon strengthens the gums and teeth. It is also very effective for preventing and curing acute inflammations of the gum margins, pyorrhea, dental caries and other oral diseases. 5. Lime has proved effective in the treatment of acute tonsillitis. A fresh lime squeezed in a glass of warm water, with four teaspoonful of honey and a quarter teaspoonful of common salt, should be sipped slowly in such cases. 6. Lime is valuable in swollen gums. A glass of diluted fresh lime-juice mixed with a pinch of rock salt should be taken in this condition. The squeezed lime rind should also be rubbed over the gums, before throwing it away. 7. Fresh leaves of mint, chewed daily, is an effective antiseptic dentifrice i.e. tooth paste. The chlorophyll combined with other antiseptic chemicals in the mint, kills all the germs causing harmful odor. It strengthens the gums by providing the required nutrients and thus prevents tooth decay, pyorrhea, premature fall of the teeth etc. It also keeps the mouth fresh and improves the sense of taste in the tongue. 8. Onion has bactericidal properties. If a person consumes one raw onion every day by thorough mastication, he will be protected from a host of tooth disorders. Chewing raw onion for three minutes is sufficient to kill all the germs in the mouth. Toothache is often allayed by placing a small piece of onion on the bad tooth or gum. 9. Orange, being an excellent source of calcium and vitamin C, is valuable in the diseases of the bone and teeth. Disorders in the structure of the teeth usually result from shortage of vitamin C and calcium and these can be overcome by sufficient intake of orange. 10. The spinach juice is effective in strengthening the gums and preventing and curing dental cavities. Chewing raw spinach leaves cures pyorrhea. A mixture of carrot juice and spinach juice, taken early in the morning, can cure bleeding and ulcerated gums. 11. Wheat is valuable in the prevention and cure of pyorrhea. It takes time to eat wheat and as it is generally taken with other foods, it compels the chewing of other foods also. This not only provides the needed exercise for the teeth and gum but also a great aid to digestion. 12. Wheat grass juice acts as an excellent mouth wash for sore throats and pyorrhea. It also prevents tooth decay and tooth aches. Therefore it is beneficial to chew wheat grass which draws out toxins from the gums and thus checks bacterial growth.
