Naturally Active Victoria County is pleased to announce that it has successfully partnered with Linda Murray and North Highlands Nordic Ski Facility to secure $5000 from Sport NS for Two New Programs: (1.) “Ski Girls Rock On Snow” Program North Highlands Nordic Ski Girls Rock On Snow is focused on delivering non-competitive programming to increase the retention of girls in sports and offset the factors that make girls six times more likely to drop out of sports than boys. The focus is not only on improving skiing skills, but empowering girls through the sport and creating opportunities to bond and build confidence along with developing teamwork and social skills. North Highland Nordic’s Ski Girls Rock On Snow Program supports, motivates, inspires, and empowers girls ages 9-19 to “try” cross-country skiing, develop their skills and to stick to cross-country skiing and lead a healthy lifestyle throughout their lifespan. Ski Girls Rock On Snow will expose participants to innovative programming led by female athlete (s) who act as positive role models/mentors. NHN wishes to get as many girls “hooked” on a healthy and active lifestyle through cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Ski Girls Rock on Snow will empower girls in Victoria County through sport by hosting fun-filled, non-competitive initiatives at North Highlands Nordic aimed at exposing young female participants to inspire girl participants. (2.) Ski-School Program for Wagmatcookewey Students North Highlands Nordic Ski-in-School Program will introduce cross-country skiing and development skills to 30 children and youth attending Wagmatcookewey School . Objectives of the program are: -Introducing Wagmatcookewey children and youth to cross-country skiing -Recruit children and youth to Jackrabbit, Track Attack and other NHN delivered development programs -Linking elementary and Junior/Senior high school cross-country ski programs with community club programs -Encouraging elementary and Junior/Senior high school to include cross-country skiing as part of their curriculum -NHN wishes to influence school children and youth to be closer and active in the natural environment that they live in.
