Nature Awareness 6/15/2014 - Vulture The term vulture is the name given to two groups of convergently evolved scavenging birds, the New World Vultures, including the well-known Californian and Andean Condors, and the Old World Vultures, including the birds which are seen scavenging on carcasses of dead animals on African plains. New World Vultures are found in North and South America, while Old World Vultures are found in Europe, Africa, and Asia. A particular characteristic of many vultures is a bald head, devoid of normal feathers. This feature helps to keep the vultures head clean and pure when feeding. Research has also shown that the bare skin may play an important role in thermoregulation as well. It is also worth noting for poetic eeriness that a group of vultures is typically called a wake. As a totem, the vulture has been called the golden purifier. The scientific term for Turkey Vulture, Cathartes Aura, actually means golden purifier. Working with the vulture as a power animal or totem tends to bring about powerful change, cleansing, and purification. A remarkable sense for energy efficiency and balance are also hallmark traits gained by working with the patterns of this animal. Vultures are also known for their patience, especially when waiting on a meal or opportunity. And, vision to seek out as well as discern beneficial situations are advantages held by vulture people. Vulture brings us a message today... Soar above the drudgeries of everyday life through spirit. Allow all that which has died to take its place in the natural cycle of your life. Allow the new to flourish in the wake of the dead. Rebirth! Symbolism: purification, patience, discernment, vision, efficiency, balance, rebirth.
