Nature can be cruel, and the animals that live in the wild must face danger every minute of their short lives. As I walked along the beach this morning taking photos of the dawn sky, I noticed a spot of darkness on top of a distant breakwall. Thinking that it might be an eagle, I walked along the beach in that direction. As I got closer to the ice covered mound, It became clear that it was not an eagle but a wet, frozen, scared deer. I can only imagine that this little one was chased by coyotes across the dunes and through the icy water onto the island where it sought safety. At first it was trying to hide behind an outcrop of ice but after some calm encouraging words from me the doe came out into the open. The temperature was zero degrees, and my feet were beginning to become frostbitten, and as I watched the deer enter the water and try to make its way back onto the icy shoreline and safety, I was forced to retreat to the warmth of my car. Fortunately, a few minutes later, I saw her walking along the road heading home, certain to have a better day ahead of her. Gods speed little one...until we meet again! 01/14/2015.
