Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is probably, thus far, my favorite film by Miyazaki; its somewhat similar in thematic content to Princess Mononoke (although perhaps not as refined), but far more focus was placed on its world and setting and ecological history than Mononoke. The characters and conflicts are subservient to the primary goal of establishing and expounding upon the mechanics and structure of the world, which in turn forms the thematic content of the movie, rather than vice versa. In this particular case thats a resounding success as, although the characters and conflicts are hardly weak, its greatest success is definitely the world and its design, or history. I guess that makes sense, given that one of the primary or initial creative sparks for the story came from the mercury pollution in Minamata Bay and how that affected the environment. It looks nice, too.
