Nautical word of the day: Range (second of several definitions for range) A line defined by a pair of navigational marks, intended to show the safest route for passage. The marks are set with one forward of the other. Range markers are commonly red rectangles, with a vertical white stripe in the center. In a position where the white stripe of the closest marker appears to join the white stripe of the farther mark, a vessel is on range and should be in the designated channel. One of the most commonly seen range markers is just west of the Chittenden Locks in Ballard.
