Navajo Head Start Passes Federal Review! After over 20 years of non-compliance, Navajo Head Start (NHS) has successfully passed the comprehensive federal tribal Designated Renewal System (DRS). During the week of May 5-9, 2014, NHS was monitored by a federal review team to examine management systems, policies & procedures, observations of instruction in the classrooms, and health & safety compliance. Based on this federal review, the Navajo Nation has received official notice from the Washington, D.C. based funding agency - Administration for Children & Families - Office of Head Star - that NHS is now in full compliance of federal mandates and will now be recipient of a 5-year non-competitive grant award at an estimated $125 million. Navajo Nation Department of Diné Education Assistant Superintendent Sharon Henderson Singer states, this was a true collaboration between the NHS leadership team, head start staff, tribal council - Health, Education and Human Services Committee, board of education, and parent policy council, furthermore, We remain excited and look forward to improving the quality of services to our Nations youngest children and families - our children deserve only the best. Dr. Lamont Yazzie, Navajo Head Start Director of Educational Services, stated, In passing the review and securing funding for the next 5 years, we can now concentrate our efforts on training staff, building instructional leaders, and building capacity in carrying out the important work of educating children and empowering families across the Navajo Nation.
