Navy Chief eyes proposing joint naval exercises with ASEAN counterparts BANGKOK, 26 August 2014 (NNT) – Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy Adm Narong Pipattanasai is poised to convene the ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting tomorrow, during which he plans to propose the idea of joint exercises for maritime disaster relief. Adm Narong has welcomed the Navy Chiefs from the other nine ASEAN countries after they arrived in the Kingdom for the 8th ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting, set to commence in Bangkok tomorrow. Adm Narong stated on this occasion that Thailand and ASEAN have long enjoyed strong naval relations, both at the bilateral and multilateral levels, and have been involved in countless activities and cooperation projects. At the upcoming meeting, he said the Royal Thai Navy will suggest that the ten ASEAN nations come together for naval exercises, with all of them to take turns hosting the annual event. The prime objective is to raise their capacities in the mitigation of maritime disasters and rescue of victims while concurrently fostering closer coordination among their naval officers ahead of the opening of the ASEAN Community. The Thai Navy Chief added that Thailand will also propose itself as the host of the ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting in 2017, along with an international naval parade. Nonetheless, the South China Sea dispute will not be brought up at the meeting tomorrow as it involves only some of the member countries.
