Navy land grabbing in Wilpattu In a statement issued by Environment Conservation Trust it is stated that Sri Lanka Navy has forcefully acquired a land of nearly 900 acres within Wilpattu National Park and built a 9 feet tall wall of soil covering the area. It further indicates that thus captured land is located in northern border of Wilpattu National Park near Modaragan Aru of Mollikulam and Wilpattu North Sanctuary. The said wall has been built covering an area extending for 2 km in the Eluwankulama-Silawathura road which was also illegally constructed inside the Wilapattu National Park by the Navy, Environment Conservation Trust observes. The organization alleges that the particular area has been forcefully acquired in order to establish a tourism zone. The statement further mentions that Navy has robbed residents of Panama area in Ampara of their cultivating lands and residential areas and initiated a massive tourism project by constructing hotels in an area of 1,220 acres which includes forests as well. The natural habitats of wild animals including elephants have been threatened due to this project, it says. LTTE threat still exists - Navy According to the statement, commenting on the matter Navy has stated that the massive wall has been erupted as LTTE terrorist threats still exist. The Environment Conservation Trust question as to why such a wall of is being constructed covering a huge area of forest when such action was not taken even during the period of LTTE terrorism.
