Nawaz Sharif calls for an end to drone strikes ISLAMABAD: The newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif in his first speech from the floor of the National Assembly, before taking oath of the office, called for an end to drone strikes, saying ‘the daily business of drones must come to an end’. Nawaz Sharif said that other countries must respect the sovereignty of Pakistan and also address the concerns of the country. Sharif became the first prime minister in the history of Pakistan to be elected thrice on Wednesday. Speaking after his election, Nawaz Sharif thanked Allah for giving him the opportunity to serve the country again. The elected prime minister assured the house that he would not disappoint the people and said by voting in the May 11 elections, the people had made their support clear for democracy. Sharif pointed to dictatorships’ weakening the federation and giving rise to terrorism and sectarianism. “The abrogation of the constitution will not be tolerated.” Accepting the challenges being faced by the country, Sharif said his government had concrete plans and would not tolerate any corruption. “There will be swift accountability and cronyism will not be tolerated.” On the issue of the power crisis, Sharif said the PML-N had plans to deal with the power outages and the results would become apparent soon. Nawaz added that his government would also concentrate on good governance, protection of minorities and called for the parliaments support. “These problems cannot be solved by one party and all need to be on the same page.” The PML-N chief said his party respected the mandate of others and did not interfere with the formation of the PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and offered the PKMAP to name the next Governor of Balochistan. “This is the first time that Baloch leadership will govern the province.” The elected prime minister also spoke of the situation in Karachi calling the city dear to them and those who live there. He added that the federal government would cooperate with the Sindh government. Nawaz said that all parties had to work together to improve the law and order situation in the country. On relations with China, Sharif praised the move of the previous government to hand over management of the Gwadar port.“A plan has been agreed upon with the Chinese PM to make a railway and road system for Chinese goods to reach Gwadar and Karachi.” He added that flow of Chinese goods would be beneficial for Pakistan. Towards the end of his speech, Nawaz Sharif thanked former National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza for conducting herself in a graceful manner. He also stressed the need for the process of democracy to continue. “The previous government completed its full term and credit goes to all parties.”
