Nduka Miracle Umunnem i need clarifications on a matter that has given me concern for serious thoughts. Not too long ago,i lost my maternal grand mum who was more than 110years. At the burial arrangement proceedings it was decided that two cows would be bought for the burial. When the elders of her clan heard it, they insisted the cows must not be brought back to her compound alive. That there would be grave consequences if that is done. That the cows must be killed at the place it was bought with such organs as the legs, heads and other vital parts removed. That such parts must not be brought home. When my uncle asked why, they revealed that this was because they did not kill a cow in burying my grand father who died over 50years ago. That if my uncle wishes to bring back the two cows alive,he must first of all kill one to appease the spirit of my grand father. That if this is undone and the cows are brought in alive that all of us would bear the grave consequences. My uncle who is a Rev minister could not consent to the option of killing a cow in the name of his dead father. And the two cows were later killed at the butchers place with the afford mentioned parts removed there. Bikonu this practice is it in the whole of igbo land or just in my part? We also heard a story of one man who faulted this, and had an accident on his way after the burial, himself and his family all died. And his community attributed it to his disobedience of bringing in a live cow. Please is this type of thing done in your place? Or have you heard about it before? As born again Christians is it good to believe that there would be grave consequences if such options as the elders layed down are not followed?
