Nearly 2000 motorists have been issued with fines this month as part of Operation Distraction – an ongoing state-wide police operation focused on reducing distraction-related crashes. From 1 August to 25 August a total of 1957 people have been issued an expiation notice or reported for using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, not having proper control of their vehicle or driving without due care. “Do yourself, your family and your wallet a favour by wearing your seatbelt and don’t unlawfully use a mobile telephone while driving,” Detective Inspector Peter Duance, acting Officer in Charge of Traffic Support Branch, said. “Seat belts save lives and driver distraction - including the unlawful use of mobile telephones - is a dangerous driving practice.” An analysis of the 94 fatal collisions that occurred last year on South Australian roads has revealed that 30 per cent of the people who died were not wearing a seatbelt and 40 per cent of the fatal collisions occurred due to driver distraction. Operation Distraction will continue until the end of the month.
